BTL Issue 14 RE:BUILD!

BTL Issue 14 RE:BUILD is here!

RE:BUILD features our contest finalists Cor de Wulf (1st place), Veronica Wasson (2nd place), and Meredith Herndon (3rd place). As well as work from Will Falk, Jennifer Campbell, Sarah Durrand, Rosalie Hendon, and Larry Bridges. Our featured artist for RE:BUILD is environmental sculptor, illustrator, and painter Stéphanie Kilgast.

genocide, human rights violations, and war crimes ravage Gaza. Not to mention the traumatic conflicts in Sudan, Syria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine, and Yemen. We are heartbroken by the lives and lands already destroyed, and are horrified by what the aftermath may look like. As violence razes across the globe, we wanted Issue 14 to lay foundations for what can come after.

This is why we asked for stories about starting over, whether by choice or force. Your explorations of falling outs, collapsed paths, the consequences of actions. Writing about rehabilitation, resilience, remaking. Words on both the erosion and the dam. Fiction, poetry, and hybrid that fights back after the war is over. And the fruit of this call was really awesome and we’re so proud to showcase these fantastic creatives.

In conjunction with publishing the brave and beautiful writing of our Issue 12 contributors, and being able to award the three winners monetarily from the submission funds, we have also used submission proceeds to match the contest prize money in donations to to Save the Children, who provide essential services and support on the ground in the West Bank and Gaza to Palestinian children impacted by the ongoing conflict. Please check them out to learn more about all the important work they do.

Thank you so much to everyone who submitted to Issue 14 RE:BUILD. It’s through the submission fees that we’re able to continue paying for our website and no-submission-cap Submittable account. And thank you to all of our readers who we would not be able to keep BTL going without.

ALSO!!!!!!!!!!! BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are so excited to announce that as of 2024, we will begin nominating contributors for the Best of the Net and Pushcart Prize!

On top of that, all literary publications going forward will be paid! We are offering $10 for poetry, $15 for fiction and nonfiction, and $20 for hybrid and experimental pieces. Since the very beginning, it has been a dream of ours to reach a point where we can financially compensate artists for their work. As an independent magazine operating solely from submission fees and donations for roughly eight years, we are proud to have reached this milestone and will continue to strive to support our incredible writers.

XOXO

Kylie
