One of the cross-genre assignments at the Spalding MFA Residency last week was erasure poetry. The task was inspired by the mind-blowing writing of Kiki Petrosino, winner of the 2021 Spalding Prize for the Promotion of Peace & Justice and whose collection White Blood: A Lyric of Virginia was our book-in-common. My black-out poem was derived from this interview with Sydney Lee Duncan for Blood Tree Literature a couple years ago, as I knew there would be some perfect poetic nuggets in there to work with!
